Divine Strake in Nevada: Divine Strake in context

When you were in elementary school, did you learn about the dangers of radioactivity?  Did any of your textbooks address the plight of Downwinders in the United States?  Did you know that tens of thousands of Americans contracted thyroid cancer from nuclear tests conducted at the Nevada Test Site?  Or that our own government carried out thousands of experiments involving radioactive materials on our own people?

The fact remains that a wealth of information about our past and present nuclear world is still shrouded in secrecy, shame and denial.  Fallout victims aren't only suffering from the physical consequences of contamination from radioactive substances, but also from the deliberate hijacking of the methods of science: governments responsible for causing fallout cancers have thwarted, delayed, pulled funding and covered up critical scientific studies into the long-term effects of radiation caused by cold war testing fallout.  Decades ago, Albert Schweitzer tried to warn us of the perils of this ignorance:  "That radioactive elements created by us are found in nature is an astounding event in the history of the earth and of the human race. To fail to consider its importance and its consequences would be a folly for which humanity would have to pay a terrible price."

A new chapter needs to be inserted in the textbooks of U.S. and World History.   Put on your thinking cap and let's explore.
